What are the difficulties that you have encountered during the process?
- It is very difficult to draw on the cardboard and I keep erasing
- The cardboard is very small thus I have to scale down everything and I make mistakes when calculating
- The cardboard is very difficult to cut

2. How do you overcome the difficulties encountered?
- I double check the measurements before I cut and draw
- I used a sharper scissors to cut the cardboard

3. What are the 2 key takeaways for this lesson?
- I've learnt what is measurable and what is not
- I've learnt the two types of testing (Quantitative and Qualitative test)Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-78038491096306752452010-07-22T20:53:00.000-07:002010-07-22T21:25:35.852-07:00Ergonomics (Product description and Idea Trigger)

The clean brush is shaped like a small broom, it is green in colour. It is long and smooth too. It could be extended in order to reach further. It is designed for cleaning places which are very crammed or tiny. It is suitable for cleaning window the window frame trench and other small and tiny places. There is a digger like tool which allows us to dig up the dirt or dusts which is hidden underneath. They thought that it would be easier if we can hook the brush up and if it could be extended. The elderly would not face any difficulties using it. When we extend the brush, it is very flimsy, thus it is difficult to use the brush when it is extended.
- It is the science of designing the equipment or workplace to fit the worker. (Wikipedia)
- Study of people's efficiency in their working environment (Apple Dictionary)
2. What are the 5 aspects of Ergonomics?
- Safety
- Comfort
- Ease of Use
- Productivity / Performance
- Aesthetics

3. For each aspects of Ergonomics, explain with an example of a product that is designed for the elderly, how the product meet that particular aspect of Ergonomics.

- Safety
- Medicine bottles — print sizes could be enlarged so those with impaired vision (due to sinus problems, for example) can more easily read the label instructions. Ergonomics can discover the optimum font style, color and size to enhance readability using the limited space available on a medicine label.

- Comfort
- Alarm clock display — some displays are harshly bright, drawing one’s eye to the light or keeping one awake when surroundings are dark. Ergonomic principles could redesign this based on contrast principles and include automatic dimming functions in low-light environments (such as when a user has turned off the room lights to sleep).

- Ease of Use
- Street Signs — in an unfamiliar area, it can be quite difficult to spot street signs. This could be addressed by using principles of visual detection to make street signs more visible.

- Productivity / Performance
- Office furniture/equipment — the use of ergonomically designed office furniture and equipment (such as office chairs and computer input devices) can drastically reduce work-related injuries and employee absences.

- Aesthetics
- Signs in the workplace — signage could be made more aesthetic by using a consistent format throughout the workplace.
* Examples are taken from http://casestudy-itgs.wikispaces.com/Social+Impacts+-+Ergonomic *Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-11184325871673645582010-07-11T18:53:00.000-07:002010-07-11T18:53:51.907-07:00Ergonomics ICompare the 2 different workplaces, state your observations.
- The first workplace shown seems a bit messy and there is a lot of things on the table, so the person using the table does not have enough space to do his work. The second workplace is more tidier and there are lesser things on the table.

Which workplace is preferred? State with reasons why one workplace is preferred over the other.
- The second workplace is preferred because there are more space to move around and it is not cluttered with things. The person using it can relax and it would certainly be more comfortable as compared to using the other untidy desk.

3. What are the considerations that should be taken into account when designing a workplace that is suitable for the user?
- The workplace must have a lot of space so that the person can move around freely, the height and the lighting must also be suitable. Then, it would meet the needs of the people.

4. Why do you think that Ergonomics is important when designing?
If we don't consider Ergonomics while designing, the product we design might not be suitable for people to use. It might also hurt the people if they use it.Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-31809247691619679342010-06-20T07:03:00.000-07:002010-06-20T07:03:14.328-07:00Holiday Task - Part 3This is my room layout:
- Trekking?
- Swimming?
- Jogging?
Most of the elderly doesn't want to exercise that much now partly because they get very tired easily and also because of their aching body. This might also be the cause of the many illnesses they have. Therefore, I think that we could have some activities once in a while to let the elderly have some exercises so that the elderly would be more fit and they might also make some friends during the activities.Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-36458851857838243662010-06-09T21:53:00.000-07:002010-06-09T21:53:17.299-07:00Elderly Challenge - Observation 2...I have observed that the elderly have very little or no activities during the day. The same goes to my grandparents. Although they still go out to buy things but it is very seldom. I think that the community club could organize more activities and encourage them to go and participate. They will also get tired very easily, taking breaks after walking only a short distance. Even if they take public transport, it will also be very crowded and they might not even get a seat to rest their legs as the other passengers might not be willing to give their seat to the elderly. Sometimes, caretakers will take care of the elderly but some elderly, who do not have a caretaker to take care of, have to take care of them themselves. So, we should also help the elderly when we see one of them in need of help (eg. helping them 2 carry things)Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-29030706423819995052010-05-29T02:45:00.000-07:002010-05-29T02:45:11.611-07:00Holiday work - Part 1...The 4 key recommendation:
- Housing for seniors
- Accessibility for seniors
- Caring for seniors
- Opportunities for seniors
The 4 key recommendation will make Singapore a more elderly-friendly place as the houses now have more features for the elderly. It also lets the elderly to be more engaged in the society and does not feel so lonely. We would also need to have some services that focuses on elderly and not on other age group. Sometimes, the elderly could also do something to contribute to the society so they will more active and not only staying at home doing nothing. It also gives the elderly to have more chances to show off their strengths in doing certain things.

1 way to make public housing more user-friendly:
- As some of the HDB flats have very narrow corridors, we should make the corridors fatter so the elderly can have more space to walk and not squeezing through the corridors

2 ways how we can ensure that the quality of elderly care here in Singapore is affordable:
- Have more gentle ramps or slope so it would be easier for the elderly to get from place to place
- Have more benches so that when the elderly is tired, there is a place for them to rest

After reading the CAI report, what are the 3 things that you can do, as an SST student, to help overcome these elderly challenges:
- We can also have some activities or games that educates the elderly
- We could have some field trips to the old folks home so we can care for them and understand them more
- As some elderly are not so independent, we could train them to be more independent and is able to take care of himself/herself (if possible)Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-50417095088398821352010-03-23T03:23:00.000-07:002010-03-23T06:08:50.363-07:00Personal Reflection (NEWater Visit)1. I have learnt how NEWater is purified to become clean water for us to drink, what the four national 'taps' are, where the reservoir located.

2. I learnt that the used water are purified using microfiltration, Reverse Osmosis and UV Disinfection. The purified water could also be mixed with reservoir water and, after it undergoes conventional water treatment, it can produce drinking water.

3. 1 interesting thing I learnt... is...
The quality of NEWater is actually better than other water and is cleaner than PUB water (the requirement).

4. By reducing, reusing and recycling water, we could help conserve water for Singapore.Yi Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12185673008914228446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544565569861371621.post-35090274217317691482010-03-08T05:42:00.001-08:002010-03-08T06:15:43.961-08:00Personal Reflection (8th Mar 2010) 3 takeaways from today ADMT lesson
--> The product that we design should be attractive to the user (our target audience)
--> The product should be convenience to the user
--> We must do enough research before we start to brainstorm on our idea

2 concepts
--> The product should be feasible and not those which are impossible
--> We should be looking at the user's point of view and not from our point of view when we decide if the product is feasible or not.

What is 1 interesting thing I've learnt
--> We cannot work on our idea when we do not search for information on the topic.
